Elena is still learning about her place in the universe. After arriving in SF she slowly heals from past traumas and eventually starts learning that her inner voice has a place in her life and isn't a scary and taboo thing. She realizes that's natural - and that she's a part of nature like the herbs her mother used to grow and tend in her garden.
As part of her emergence from Ramon Emmanuel's authority, Elena decides to start sleeping on the sand dunes on the night of the full moon. This is because Ramon Emmanuel forbade sleeping there ever, saying there was a monster roaming the beach at night. Marisol and others tell her this was a fib, so she celebrates her independence from the commune by doing the forbidden thing.
It is during her trip south, on the beach, while she studies the moon and stars looking for hints on how the world is really structured, that she develops her own philosophy of life. Her friend informs her the moon is only reflecting sunlight - something she never realized before. This opens up to her a whole new pattern of thinking about how we all reflect the thoughts and feelings displayed before us by others.
Elena wants to be like the sun - letting good feelings and love flow through her so when others reflect her it will be all good.
Of course all this philosophizing makes her friend love her more so he's very put off when she wants to separate from him before they reach the commune. He doesn't accept her explanation that this is for his own good and for his safety. Of course at that time she believes she could reunite with her husband, so she doesn't want the friend hanging out in the woods waiting for her.
