Elena loves animals. She has a special affinity with them to the point she is sure she can tell what they are thinking sometimes. During her years in the commune she often pauses her field work to spend time among the animals. Ramon Emmanuel thinks that's unbearable and at times yells at her for being with the men and animals while the other women are working. She feels grateful for his anger, believing it purifies her and is a gift from the wise one... at least she feels that way at first. As she gets older she becomes more jaded and less brainwashed. (Why? - I'm not sure yet.) Perhaps they argue over a sick animal. She loves them so.. it would be enough for her to cross the man she believes is God's emissary on earth.
Animals from her youth - mainly dogs, cats and horses. During her commune years - horses, dogs, cats, chickens, rabbits. The chickens and rabbits are for food. In San Francisco - cats live at the hotel.
