Elena's conception of history is what she's learned through the Bible. She knows very little of her family's history, a fact that pains her greatly. She doesn't entirely accept the Bible but doesn't express that. She likes learning a bit about it now and then but doesn't see how it relates to her life. The most faithful one in the novel is likely to be Elena's friend in SF. The fearful zealousness of the cult of Ramon Emmanuel can't be called faith. Her mother was very much against the Catholic church because of the way her people had been forced to work there at the expense of their ancestral lands and culture.
