Education

Elena was not formally educated when she was young. Perhaps that made her more vulnerable to Ramon Emmanuel's influence. But after she married her husband educated her in English and writing. She has an aptitude for that and helped teach her children as well.

When she gets to SF she meets Marisol whose only education seems to be in reading playing cards as if they were tarot. When her new male friend (unnamed at this point) learns she can read, he encourages her and shares reading materials with her.

And other than that, there's not much education going on in her life. Many children of that era and general locale were educated in formal settings but because her father's rancho was in a remote mountain valley she didn't have access to classes as some other children did.
