Elena's world is rugged. Though the people tend to carve out a space for their families and domesticate that one space, the wilderness crowds in and obliterates all traces of human endeavor very quickly if the work is not maintained. For example a path through the forest will disappear entirely within a few years if not used constantly.
Tools used on the commune are an aging plow, shovels and hoes and rakes purchased in Santa Cruz where they're manufactured by the natives, and not much else. These settlers don't have much, but then, they're used to that.
