Elena's mother shared her knowledge of native medicinal plants, and Elena learned more about healing from the women at the commune. She became known as a good healer and even after moving to SF was sought after for her healing abilities. This did not sit well with a doctor from the East Coast who tried to prove to the San Franciscans that Elena's herbal cures were quackery. However since they sometimes worked better than what the doctor offered, her fame grew and she was able to help many people. Having this skill gave Elena more self-respect than any other aspect in her life, especially when appreciated by the city dwellers.
